b. Conventional medical treatment The Conventional treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis treats the disease condition with the purpose of reducing inflammation and /or suppressing immunity. Medications reduce inflammation in the spine and other joints and organs. To reduce pain and stiffness conventional treatment uses Aspirin and other NSAIDs.
Commonly used NSAIDs (Non-Steroidal Anti Inflammatory drugs)
- Indomethacin (Indocin)
- Tolmetin (Tolectin)
- Sulindac (Clinoril)
- Naproxen (Naprosyn)
- Diclofenac (Voltaren)
The adverse effects of these medications are:
- Stomach upset
- Nausea
- Abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Sometimes bleeding ulcers
They advise taking these medicines with food in order to reduce side effects. In advanced cases suffering from this disease they use even stronger medicines to suppress the body’s immune system like:
- Sulfasalazine (Azulfidine)
- Methotrexate (Rheumatrex , Trexall)
- Cortisone
- Cyclosporin
- TNF-α blockers
Some of the adverse effects of such medications:
- Potential toxicity of liver which could lead to Cirrhosis.
- Toxicity of bone marrow which could lead to anemia.
