TN is not fully understood. Current understanding about TN is suggestive of demyelination of the Trigeminal Nerve. It means, eroding of one of the upper layers of the nerve, giving abnormal hypersensitivity to the entire area which is supplied by that nerve.

TN is not necessarily an inherited disease. In some cases we find evident of family history of TN. In many cases there may not be such history. Some patients may also give family history of Multiple sclerosis, Brain tumor, or ther neurological disease.

TN patients present with typical symptoms. Most cases can be diagnose clinically by evaluating the symptoms. The symptoms include moderate to most severe pain which is described as lancinating, electric current like, screwed up feeling, etc. The pain may last for a few seconds to a few hours (in extreme cases).
