6 years old boy, Y. G. S. [Patient reference number L7428] was brought to our clinic with complaint of Psoriasis since one and a half year. He had lesions on both the palms, soles, elbow joints and knee joints. Patient had severe itching, burning and cracks in the skin with occasional bleeding. The skin had turned black and was thickened. The child was unable to walk, play or unable to attend school/ tuitions due to the discomfort caused by Psoriasis and so his parents had started home tuitions for him. He had received local steroid treatment and Vitamin A supplements in the past but this had not helped him much.
He also had complaint of recurrent cold, cough and difficulty in breathing, which was aggravated in winter, rainy season, and by drinking cold drinks.
He was a fair, lean, smiling (despite the suffering) hyperactive child. He had a normal appetite with craving for sweet, salt and milk. He was not very fond of vegetables. He had no particular thermal preferences and would sweat normally. He had no complaints pertaining to bowel and bladder functions.
He was a student of Grade 1 and stayed with his parents. He was a hyperactive, stubborn, irritable and sensitive child. If he did not get the things he wanted, he would weep till he got them. He was described as being good in studies with a sharp memory.
He had not suffered from any major illnesses in the past. His father suffered from Filariasis and his maternal aunt had hypothyroidism. His paternal uncle was hypertensive and diabetic and apart from this there was no history of any other major illness in the family.
Based on the symptoms he was prescribed Lycopodium 200 (as Constitutional remedy) and Sulphur 200 [as intermittent doses]. There was dramatic improvement in the patient's Psoriasis with continued medication. The Psoriasis on the palms, elbows and knee joints totally cleared. Psoriasis on the soles improved by 80 %. There were no major episodes of cold, cough or breathlessness in that period, which indicates a very good improvement in the patient's immunity. His treatment was continued till he recovered completely and thereafter treatment was concluded.
This case illustrates the efficacy of Homoeopathic medicines in treating chronic and difficult skin diseases such as Psoriasis in children and that too without any kind of side-effects.
