Painfulness in Oral Lichen Planus is a big challenge for the patients as they are more affected by the pain rather than the lesions of Lichen Planus.

Oral Lichen Planus is a chronic, inflammatory condition which is non infectious in nature. It affects the mucous membrane of the mouth, tongue, inner side of the cheeks, gums and palate.

It usually affects adults over the age of 25 years, but some people at younger age and even children sometimes are affected with this condition.

Symptoms of Lichen Planus:

  • It is a very painful condition with red, swollen, painful patches and even the open sores or ulcers inside the mouth or the oral cavity. It can affect tongue, inner cheeks, palate or gums.
  • Sensitivity to having hot or cold fluids like tea, coffee, hot milk, hot chocolate, sugar etc.
  • Inability to eat spicy foods.

What are the causes of Lichen Planus?

Oral Lichen Planus can be caused by following causes

  • Constant irritation by dental implants
  • Repeated trauma at one spot in the oral cavity
  • Long term consumption of NSAIDS i.e. nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
  • Long term use of anti-malarials.
  • Long term use of certain cardiac drugs like beta blockers and ACE inhibitors.
  • Stress

Can Lichen Planus get converted into cancer?

Oral Lichen Planus is sometimes a pre-cancerous condition, however, if it is not given attention and left behind then it can turn into a cancerous growth.

Management of painfulness in Oral Lichen Planus:

  • Anesthetic gel could be applied to get relief in the pain, before and after food. It is advisable to avoid use of any cortisone in such gel.
