Causes of Meniere’s Disease:

The exact reason for Meniere’s disease is still unknown. A few of the studies have shown that an increase in the fluid volume may be one of the primary reasons for Meniere’s disease. Excess secretion of the fluid or inadequate absorption may be the reason for the increase in the fluid levels inside the inner ear. Some of the other related factors are viral infections, allergies, genetic traits, frequent migraine attacks, or any auto-immune disorder.

Symptoms of Meniere’s Disease:

Meniere’s disease attack may initially start with occasional or fluctuating hearing loss and may eventually result in dizziness or vertigo. The common symptoms include:

  • Disturbance in maintaining body balance
  • Tinnitus (the sensation of ringing noise or buzzing inside the ear)
  • Dizziness
  • Headaches
  • Sensitivity to sound (loud or sharp)
  • Loss of hearing

Along with the main symptoms, patients may exhibit other discomforts in the form of:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Blurred vision
  • Palpitation or increased heartbeat
  • Trembling

The episodes of vertigo (spinning like sensation), hearing loss, and tinnitus (kind of buzzing or ringing sound inside the ear) may usually last between 15 minutes to 04 hours. The frequency between two attacks may vary between a few in a week to one odd in a fortnight or month or once in a year also. The loss of hearing is not imminent and occurs gradually over a period if left unattended.

Diagnosis of Meniere’s Disease:

Meniere’s disease can be diagnosed by performing a certain set of tests for the ear. Some of the tests carried out to assess Meniere’s disease are:

(i) Balance Test: Electronystagmogram (ENG) test can be performed to measure the balance function of the ear. The eye movement of the patient is closely monitored on passing air or water in this test to check for the ear balance. An electrocochleography test can also be carried out to check the inner fluid pressure in some cases.

(ii) Hearing Test: An audiometric test will help in ascertaining any possible hearing impairment of the ears. The affected ear may show signs of hearing loss.

7 Best Homeopathic Remedies for Meniere’s Disease:

The unpredictable nature of Meniere’s disease attack makes it all the more challenging to treat this condition. However, with continuous and systematic medication, the recurrence of these attacks can be reduced. Homeopathy medicines are found to offer a long-lasting relief in Meniere’s disease. A few of the commonly recommended medicines for Meniere’s disease are:

(i) Chininum Sulph: When the symptoms include periodical episodes of tinnitus (the sensation of ringing noise or buzzing inside the ear) or a sudden attack of vertigo followed by tinnitus, the patients may lose balance and fall. Chininum Sulph is the most common homeopathic medicine recommended for patients with Meniere’s disease.

(ii) Phosphorus: Phosphorous is recommended as a remedy for Meniere’s disease when the patients complain of echoing sounds in their ears. Experiencing a gradual hearing impairment along with vertigo immediately after rising from the bed indicate this medicine. When external stimuli, such as bright lights and sharp noises, trigger sudden attacks of vertigo, this remedy is recommended.

(iii) Chenopodium: This is one of the best suitable remedies for Meniere’s disease when a person hears a buzzing noise in the ear. Sudden episodes of vertigo that may follow the buzzing noise in the ear and tinnitus attacks that are synchronous with heartbeats are also some of the common symptoms wherein patients will be recommended with Chenopodium medicine.

(iv) Gelsemium: Gelsemium is usually prescribed when patients experience symptoms such as dizziness. Difficulty in walking with a loss of balance may also arise from dizziness. Vision turning blurred and the heaviness of eyelids also indicate this remedy.

(v) Theridion: When the flare-up of vertigo increases with the closure of eyelids, Theridion is indicated. The patients also come up with complaints of nausea or vomiting along with vertigo. Also, the patient becomes very sensitive to noises and may not be able to bear loud noises at most times. Theridion is prescribed for patients with the abovementioned underlying symptoms.

(vi) Cocculus Indicus: Cocculus Indicus is recommended to patients with symptoms such as vertigo and dizziness with frequent nausea and vomiting. A sudden loss of balance, difficulty in hearing, and feeling of blockage in the ear or dread of sudden noise indicate this medicine.

(vii) Natrum Salicylicum: Natrum Sal. is an excellent remedy for tinnitus accompanied by vertigo and deafness of the ears. When the patients complain of a loss of hearing over a period indicating progressive deafness, this medicine is indicated.

Along with the medication, the patients are suggested to closely follow-up with their doctors on the improvements and the change in trigger patterns if they feel any. This can help in recommending a progressive and effective remedy planned by your doctor.

So, if you happen to suffer from Meniere’s disease at any time, count on homeopathy without a second thought to obtain relief in the condition effectively and safely without any side-effects.
